1. a tendency to say or do the opposite of what is suggested.
2. Psychology. a type of behavior marked by resistance to suggestion. Passive negativism is the kind in which the individual fails to do what is expected. Active negativism is the kind in which he does the opposite of what is expected.
3. Philosophy. a) any doctrine of which doubt or denial is an essential characteristic, such as skepticism, agnosticism, or atheism. b) any doctrine that rejects the validity of natural reality.
